Balkans    POPE BEATIFYING SLOVENIAN BISHOP
Slovenes gathering in the medieval city of Edt Maribor on the eve of Pope John Paul II's arrival here say they are delighted that he will beatify their adored 19th century bishop, Anton Martin Slomsek.
In addition to the beatification, John Paul, who arrived on Sunday for his second visit to Slovenia, is meeting President Milan Kucan.
Workers were finishing preparations on Saturday at Betnava Field on the outskirts of Maribor, where the Mass is to be held. Police officers patrolled the woods around the town on horseback and in helicopters to ensure security for the pontiff's visit.
By Saturday afternoon, about 150,000 free tickets for the mass were delivered throughout Slovenia -- where more than 80 percent of its 2 million people are Roman Catholics -- and to neighbouring countries.
