East Timor     BISHOP NASCIMENTO WARNS OF MORE KILLINGS
The violence in East Timor may escalate into genocide if the militia forces are not brought under control, according to Bishop Nascimento of Bacau.
The bishop, interviewed by Reuters, said the number of people killed is still unknown.
He said: "People say...they are talking about 200, 300. It is only one estimate but we are not sure. It is very difficult to verify our information. The main problem in East Timor is always the problem of information... what we need is someone to stop the violence.''
He urged that a tribunal be set up to investigate reports of atrocities.
In Bacau, 120 km east of Dili, residents said the market reopened late last week, and the clinic was packed with patients. Some people who had headed to the hills for safety have started to return.
