Melbourne    COLLINGWOOD PRESIDENT TO DO FIRST READING AT FOOTBALL MASS
President of the Collingwood Football Club Eddie McGuire will read the first reading at the third annual Football Mass, to be held in Melbourne's St Patrick's Cathedral on Sunday morning, the eve of Grand Final week.
Principal celebrant at the Mass will be the Archbishop of Melbourne Dr George Pell, who says the concept has proved so popular it has now become a permanent fixture on Melbourne's football calendar.
Official invitations have been extended to all footballers in the 10 Victorian AFL clubs, the AFL Executive and Commissioners, all Brownlow Medal winners, the clubs' Presidents, Directors, Commissioners, Coaches and Umpires and Catholic primary and secondary schoolchildren in the Melbourne Archdiocese.
"Many football players, coaches and administrators acknowledge the importance of God in their lives and I hope many of them will attend the Football Mass. I will welcome them in a shared celebration of faith and good sportsmanship," said Archbishop Pell.
The Football Mass continues the tradition of the Melbourne Catholic Archdiocese celebrating local sporting festivals. For some years, the Racing Community has gathered at St Francis Church on the eve of the Spring Carnival to celebrate Mass.
