|East Timor||CARITAS TO OPEN IN DARWIN|
Caritas Australia is opening an office for Caritas East Timor in Darwin.
Caritas Australia spokeswoman Jane Woolford said the Australian agency had been mandated by Caritas Internalis to open the office because the Caritas East Timor office and organisation no longer existed and it's former director had been killed. The Darwin-based office would probably be staffed by Australians, she said.
Meanwhile Jesuit Refugee Service has been coordinating the refugee assistance initiatives of Fr Maurie Heading SJ, based at Darwin's Nungalinya College. The St Vincent de Paul Society has also geared itself to respond to the needs of the refugees.
Bishop Ted Collins was on hand to welcome the first 1000 refugees to Darwin. They are being housed in tend cities erected by the army.
