Italy    PROCESS OF BEATIFICATION OF FIRST MARTYR VICTIM OF ITALIAN MAFIA BEGINS
The process of beatification of Father Puglisi will begin at the Cathedral of Palermo, Italy, six years after being murdered by the Mafia.
The Holy See has already accepted the "declaration of martyrdom" of this priest, who was killed on 13 September 1993.
After listening to Pope John Paul II historic homily in 1993 at Agrigento, Sicily, in which the Pontiff strongly protested against the Mafia, Father Puglisi, Parish priest of Brancaccio, began to courageously denounce the crimes perpetrated there.
He was afterwards killed by the Mafia, which became affected by the priest predication. Due to the murder of Father Puglisi and his witness of the Catholic faith, a strong wave of protest developed against the abuses of the Mafia.
