|East Timor||CHURCH SERVICES TO PRAY FOR EAST TIMORESE|
Mass is being offered in solidarity with the people of East Timor in many churches in Australia, including Sydney later this afternoon and Hobart this evening.
A service in Darwin yesterday went overtime, lasting hours. It included many of the evacuees. AP reports that laughing children kicked soccer balls between the rows of army tents, their temporary homes, while parents were worried about family members who fled to the hills, or who were taken away in trucks towards Indonesian-controlled West Timor by the Indonesian military, who are accused of complicity or of taking part in the militia violence.
The Sydney mass this afternoon will be celebrated for the people of East Timor and for the members of Caritas and other church ministers killed in the past week, by Bishop David Cremin in St Mary's Cathedral at 5:30 pm.
Hobart's new Archbishop, the Most Rev. Adrian Doyle, will be the main celebrant at the special diocesan Mass to be offered at 7:30 pm in the city's St Mary's Cathedral.
