East Timor     CARDINAL WELCOMES PEACEKEEPING FORCE
Cardinal Edward Clancy has welcomed the Indonesian Government's decision to invite an international peacekeeping force into East Timor while expressing his horror at continuing atrocities.
Cardinal Clancy said: "The events in East Timor over recent days defy any attempt to translate them into words.
"We stand aghast that such things can still happen in a world that claims the sophistication and civilisation that ours does we have witnessed nothing short of genocide.
"[But] the most recent news about a peacekeeping force gives us special reason for rejoicing and greater optimism."
