|East Timor||CARDINAL WELCOMES PEACEKEEPING FORCE|
Cardinal Edward Clancy has welcomed the Indonesian Government's decision to invite an international peacekeeping force into East Timor while expressing his horror at continuing atrocities.
Cardinal Clancy said: "The events in East Timor over recent days defy any attempt to translate them into words.
"We stand aghast that such things can still happen in a world that claims the sophistication and civilisation that ours does … we have witnessed nothing short of genocide.
"[But] the most recent news about a peacekeeping force gives us special reason for rejoicing and greater optimism."
