Europe    NEW DUTCH BISHOP'S CONSERVATISM UNDER FIRE
The newly-appointed Bishop of Groningen, Dr Wilhelmus Eijk, came under fire in the Dutch press for his reported views that mixed marriages should be discouraged and homosexuality is a neurotic disorder.
The Tablet reports that criticism followed the publication in the weekly Hervormd Nederland of excerpts from the synopsis of his lectures on moral theology were published in the weekly.
In a letter to his diocese published on 5 September, the new bishop said he was quoted out of context. He said the passages were taken from manuscript notes and were not meant for publication. He said that he hoped to become a shepherd for his flock in coming years.
Dr Eijk is also alleged to have taught his students that homosexuals are not capable of real reciprocal love and that the wrongs committed by Catholics against the Jewish people have often been exaggerated.
Fr Herman Verbeek, a priest of the Groningen diocese and former member of the European Parliament for the Green Left party, suggested that the dissemination of these opinions might be punishable under the Dutch law against discrimination. The office of the public prosecutor opened an informal investigation.
