Bishop Suwatan of Manado, president of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference, announced on Friday that Sunday 12 September, will be a "day of prayer for the victims of these heinous acts," calling on Catholics around the world to join them.
In a message to the international community, the bishops' conference asked everyone to continue to maintain solidarity with the people of East Timor and to keep them in their prayers. The bishops denounced "the systematic massacre and forced removal of the people of East Timor."
"Hundreds of Timorese have been killed, including three priests and four nuns. Thousands are being forced to flee the country in an effort to thin out East Timor's population" said the brief statement. Pope John Paul II has sent the bishops' conference a letter of condolence and solidarity.
