East Timor     REPORTS OF TIMORESE FEAR AND INSECURITY CONSISTENT
Reports now beginning to filter back to Caritas Australia from remaining church personnel point to an air of fear and insecurity amongst the people.
According to a media release from Caritas yesterday, those venturing out onto the streets in Bacau feel threatened. "When they meet the TNI [now largely departed Indonesian Army] they smile, but if there is no returning smile, they retreat."
The source of the information was Fr Leo Wearden of Bathurst Island, who had managed to make contact with the office of Bishop Basilio Nascimento of Bacau.
He said: "The people in Bacau have nowhere to go to get food and this is becoming an increasing problem."
He learned that electricity is available for short periods but the people urgently need medical supplies, tents and materials that can be used to erect shelters before the rain, due in October, begins.
