Vatican     POPE PRAYS FOR TAIWAN EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
As aftershocks were further devastating the island of Taiwan, Pope John Paul II was praying with pilgrims at his regular Sunday audience for victims of the earthquake.
He said: "In these days my thoughts have constantly turned to the beloved people of Taiwan as they recover from the recent earthquake and its tragic aftermath. With profound concern I commend the victims to Almighty God and implore his divine consolation and strength upon all the bereaved. I am likewise confident that the international community will respond with renewed solidarity and ready assistance in the urgent work of relief and rebuilding."
The bishops in Taiwan dedicated yesterday as a day of prayer. A collection for the victims was taken up in all 445 parishes on the island. Most of the aid to Taiwan from the Catholic Church worldwide is being coordinated through Taiwan's Caritas. The churches, schools, and religious institutions, which have not been seriously damaged by the earthquake, have been put at the immediate disposal of those who have remained homeless.
