Vatican     POPE WARNS OF INTERNET DANGERS
The Internet's absence of regulation creates a danger of "cultural subjection," Pope John Paul warned Italian journalists yesterday.
In a statement delivered to the Catholic Union of the Italian Press, which was celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Pontiff said that the Internet provides an "extraordinary opportunity" for the free flow of information, and affords "unprecedented cultural potential." But if that flow of information is not accompanied by a "critical spirit," he cautioned, the net result could be detrimental to society.
He called for the active involvement of government and social leaders to help individuals make "positive choices" in the use of information, so that internet could be used to develop human potential and respect the individual conscience.
