East Timor     WEST TIMOR CRISIS DEEPENS
Fears for the health and safety of East Timorese refugees held by Bishop Ratu of Atambua diocese in West Timor are being realised.
He told sources of the Rome-based MISNA news agency: "We received confirmation that four people, including one woman and three men, were kidnapped by the militia from a camp near the city during the night between Sunday and Monday."
He said that the city of Atambua is overwhelmed by refugees: "We do not know what to do. In the city there are more refugees than residents. So many people arrive each day, in need of food, water, medicine, shelter. The priests and missionaries present are doing everything possible to assist these people, though there are so many. We do not have the means to assist them all."
He called for immediate international action: "An intervention of the international community is necessary also in West Timor. In the next few days an office of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) and one of the International Red Cross Committee should open in West Timor. We must guarantee the indispensable and offer them the possibility to return home if they wish to do so."
