East Timor     BISHOP BELO: THE UN MUST INTERVENE ALSO IN WEST TIMOR
Dili's Bishop Carlos Belo has requested that the UN peace-keeping force be given a mandata to intervene also in West Timor.
During a press conference yesterday in the Portuguese city of Porto, Bishop Belo said that Timorese independence supporters hiding in Indonesia are being persecuted. He said that, without a UN intervention, these people remain at great risk.
Various estimates indicate that about 200,000 Eresidents of East Timor, almost one fourth of the entire population, are currently hiding in the western sector of the island.
