|Poland||POPE PLEADS FOR THE NEW POOR|
"The cry of the poor demands a tangible and generous response from us," John Paul II said in his homily in the city of Elk. Elk is in a magnificent natural setting of forests and lakes and green hills, but unemployment has reached 20%, double the national average.
Speaking from an altar shaped like a ship's bow, encircled by fishermen's nets, under a cabin roof, the Pope pleaded for the poor, "because development and progress cannot take place at the expense of man."
