|Poland||FORMER SOVIET CATHOLICS TRAVEL TO SEE POPE|
Thousands of Catholics from former Soviet republics traveled to Poland yesterday for a Mass with Pope John Paul II, including the Lithuanian president.
Accompanied by Polish politicians and Vilnius Archbishop Audris Joseph Bachkis, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus took his seat on the altar near where the pope would conduct the ceremony. Scores of thousands filled the tree-lined meadow in this rural farming community in northeast Poland.
A major theme of the pope's 13-day pilgrimage to his homeland is promoting spiritual development in formerly communist regions to the east. The visit began Saturday.
