London's Anglican Westminster Abbey has appointed its first Roman Catholic organist since the reformation.
38 year old James O'Donnell is currently organist at the neighbouring Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral.
His appointment last week caused surprise in both Anglican and Catholic circles. Anglicans have questioned whether a Catholic should hold a senior post at the Abbey, the official place of worship of the Queen, the head of the Church of England. Meanwhile, Catholics are dismayed to lose a man regarded as one of the Cathedral's best assets and fear that the Cathedral might mot be able to find an equally gifted replacement.
