The Vatican Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life has issued a new set of instructions on cloistered convents, saying that such religious houses are "uniquely necessary" to the life of the Church, because they furnish an "explicit and radical" witness to the love of God.
Entitled Verbi Sponsa, the new Vatican document outlines the varieties of cloistered life, and the rules that apply to such institutions. The document pays particular attention to the religious orders which are devoted exclusively to prayer, without engaging in any outside activity. The rules for such cloistered religious orders must be approved by the Holy See.
