The United Nations yesterday condemned abductions carried out by gunmen on the left and right in Colombia, including the kidnapping of more than 140 people from a Roman Catholic church.
In his statement, he appealed to the ELN to release 59 of the people still being held after last Sunday's mass kidnapping in a Catholic church in the southwest city of Cali.
The ELN and larger FARC, both founded in the mid-1960s, have long used kidnappings and ransoms to help bankroll their war effort.
Meanwhile, Cali's Archbishop Isaias Duarte Cancino has responded to the President's criticism of unnamed priests for maintaining contacts with rebel groups, by instructing them to cut all existing ties.
