Delegates to a Catholic conference in Sydney earlier this week considered the impact on Church mission at the local level, of world economic globalisation.
The meeting was the 26th annual gathering of Australia's diocesan Catholic Development Funds. It discussed the nature of the Church's mission before determining how it is realised in practical terms in the education, health, welfare and parish sectors in which the church works.
In line with increasing interdependence of economies on a gobal scale, the meeting discussed financial collaboration between dioceses.
Bishop Barry Collins of the Diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes spoke of the assistance given to his diocese by the Development Fund of the Archdiocese of Canberra-Goulburn. With the funds, Wilcannia-Forbes was able to employ a full time person to set up and run Centacare. Now this agency has grown to ten people across the diocese, working with disadvantaged white and black people.
