Social Justice    HUGE RESPONSE TO DEBT PETITION
A petition to Federal Parliament to free the world's poorest countries from debt in 2000 has attracted the largest number of signatures of any campaign on a foreign affairs issue, say organisers.
The Jubilee 2000 Coalition of Church and Community groups handed over a petition on 1 June with 370,000 signatures calling for the cancellation of debt.
Columban Fr Brian Gore, who represented the Australian Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes at the presentation, said: "More and more people recognise the issue of Third World Debt as the gravest moral issue facing our planet and the human family as we move into the next millennium."
He said the signatures campaign was only the beginning.
