The backlash against the Kosovar refugees is a sad reflectino on some sections of the Australian community who have adopted an evolvling attitude that people receiving support should be grateful for the charity of others.
Adelaide's Centacare Catholic Family Services Director Mr Dale West said that people who could refer to refugees of war as "ingrates" and "whingers" in any circumstances, had no understanding of the complex needs of those people.
"True compassion and support for the Kosovar refugees must extend beyond the provision of sheter and food," Mr West said.
"The government and thne Australian people generally need to understand that the trauma experienced by these Kosovar people, including the dislocation from their country, will cause, among other things, fear and uncertainty about new environments.
