Seminarians in Jakarta and Flores have joined election watch committees to monitor the 7 June general election in Indonesia, for which campaign rallies thus far have spawned no serious violence.
The seminarians' involvement in election monitoring committees aims to encourage voters to use their voting rights, Father Emmanuel Widayat Trinugroho, deputy rector of the Jakarta-based Driyarkara Catholic Schools of Philosophy, told UCA News.
Seminarians have registered voluntarily with seven monitoring committees as individuals, not for their college, and they will be deployed along with other volunteers at polling booths throughout the Jakarta region, he said.
Meanwhile, Divine Word-run St. Paul Major Seminary on Flores Island will deploy 700 students throughout Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) province in eastern Indonesia for the elections.
