A sharp rise in the number of young homeless people referred to Adelaide's Centacare Catholic Family Services in the past year has been attributed to the increasing breakdown of families.
Centacare Director Dale West said the organisation's Youth Services Office had received 289 referrals in the three month period to 31 March this year, compared to 175 for the same period last year.
He said the 67% increase is a sad reflection on the increasing breakdown of family relationships.
"The complexity of issues that young people face is also increasing with self-neglect following sexual abuse, serious mental health problems, and self-harming including suicide attempts, all exacerbated by the high levels of drug abuse," he said.
