|Italy||SENIOR CARDINAL CALLS FOR EASY MARRIAGE ANNULMENT|
A respected Italian prelate has called on the Church to "open up" to divorced people, arguing that many failed unions could be easily annulled because they were "not sacred to start with".
Cardinal Ersillo Tonini, emeritus Archbishop of Ravenna, said marriages according to the wishes of Christ were indissoluble, but offered the prospect of a loophole with less bureaucracy and more and speedier annulments
"Faced with the desire, or the reality, of re-marriage on the part of Christians who have seen their previous one fail, one must seriously examine whether these [unions] can be considered a sacrament and hence indissoluble," said the 85 year-old Cardinal.
