|Ireland||RELIGIOUS ORDERS WELCOME GOVERNMENT CHILD ABUSE ENQUIRY|
The Christian Brothers and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate have welcomed an Irish Government decision to establish a Commission to enquire into child abuse.
The Brothers say they are ready to face up to whatever the enquiry brings, and they have promised full cooperation. The Oblates have also welcomed the enquiry, and say they have apologised to those who have suffered.
The Commission was announced by Prime Minister Bertie Ahern as part of a package of measures that also includes the establishment of a $A10 million counselling service for victims. He made the announcement in the context of an apology to victims of child abuse on behalf of the State and its citizens.
