Aid workers attempting to assist thousands of refugees in East Timor are receiving constant threats from militia groups.
Caritas Australia's National Director Tom Story, said Caritas East Timor staff members have been told they will be attacked unless they stop assisting refugees fleeing violent attacks by the militia.
The Catholic aid and development agency is one of the few organisations present to provide emergency relief in East Timor.
"We are extremely concerned about the situation as these are not idle threats. Last week Caritas workers were bashed after having their car stopped while delivering food to a community in Ambeno. The vehicle was held and a ransom demanded," Mr Story said.
