|UK||REPORT BACKS CLERGY APPRAISAL|
Priests could soon be subject to appraisal procedures similar to those used in the business world.
The Tablet says a report of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales suggests a form of appraisal based on a questionnaire and a series of interviews in which the priest would assess his own situation and make plans for the future.
It outlines possible models for dioceses, including peer appraisal (by fellow clergy or lay people) and episcopal appraisal (carried out by the bishop).
The report recommends that no priest should have to take part in appraisal unless he wants to. It emphasises that appraisal is no substitute for counselling or spiritual direction, but should be complementary to it.
