South Korea    CATHOLIC CHURCH SEEKS UN PROTECTION FOR REFUGEES FROM NORTH
The Catholic Church in South Korea has urged the United Nations to grant refugee status to North Koreans in northeastern China who fled their country in search of food.
UCA News reports that hundreds of thousands of North Koreans who have fled to China live in fear of being sent back and executed or jailed, "and they must be recognized and protected as refugees by international law," says a petition that the Catholic bishops' Committee for the Evangelisation of North Korea made public in Seoul late last month.
The committee is appealing for China not to repatriate the North Koreans and for the United Nations to set up refugee camps in China for them. It also says that it will raise funds for the refugees if they are allowed to stay.
