Rector of Sydney's St John's Anglican Church, Darlinghurst, Rev Dr Bill Lawton, has paid tribute to the way in which the Jesuits, and Ignatian spirituality, have touched the wider Christian community. He was preaching at an interdenominational service held at St John's College, Sydney University, to commemorate the order's Australian sesquicentenary.
Following the service Rev Dr Lawton said the passion felt throughout the service was enormous. "The spirit of the Jesuit community is overwhelming and it was an amazing experience to feel this positive connection with other religious denominations. There is such an intensity about the Jesuit tradition and the way it has touched so many lives as people embark on their own spiritual journey. There is a great debt owed to the Jesuits."
For the past 30 years, Australian Jesuits have pursued their theological studies at the interdenominational United Faculty of Theology, located at Ormond College within the University of Melbourne.
