India    CATHOLICS THREATEN TO BECOME HINDUS TO PROTEST DISCRIMINATION
Low-caste leaders in a Catholic parish in southern India's Tamil Nadu state say some 3000 of their people will become Hindus if the Church fails to protect them from oppression within it.
S.K.R. Lourdu, secretary of the Dalit Christian Council, said the Sacred Heart Brothers in St. Anne's parish do not promote dalit (low-caste) boys to the final class of their secondary school. UCA News reports that he contends that the brothers "did not want us to come up in life."
Salesian Bishop Malayappan Chinnappa of Vellore dismissed the threat and allegations, although he said the brothers' human relations "could have been better." He said 86 percent of Vellore's 130,000 Catholics are dalits "and all our programs are aimed at their development."
