Theologian and one of the authors of the new Catechism of the Catholic Church Bishop Alessandro Maggiolini has explained that limbo no longer appears in Christian doctrine, but instead we should consider that unbaptised babies as simply entrusted to the mercy of God.
He said limbo was never defined as a dogma, but was a "theological hypothesis not solidly founded on Revelation."
The Catechism seems to suggest that at the end of our earthly life, and after purification in Purgatory for those who need it, there are no other options to beatitude or damnation.
Bishop Maggiolini says that while it is believed that the Lord Jesus can reach these little ones who have need of being freed from original sin, it is better not to be too curious about the means Christ uses.
