The suffocation earlier this month of a Nigerian deportee gagged by authorities has provoked Vienna's Cardinal Christoph Schönborn to sharply condemn racist remarks by individual Austrian politicians have made about the case, and about Nigerian immigrants in general.
Such an event must sound the alarm for everyone concerned for human rights and dignity, the Archbishop said.
The Tablet reports that the cardinal staunchly defended the Austrian aid organisation Caritas, which has been accused in some right-wing circles of sheltering Nigerian drug-addicts and drug-dealers. Everyone who was familiar with Caritas, Schönborn said, knew that the organisation had only one principle - to help those on the fringes of society regardless of their nationality or colour.
