The Catholic Church and the World Lutheran Federation have concluded their study of a joint declaration on the doctrine of justification, the key theological issue which has divided the two communions for centuries.
A joint statement acceptable to both churches had been published in June 1997, but the Vatican had withheld final approval because of some reservations about that statement.
But yesterday, Cardinal Edward Cassidy, the Australian who is President of the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity, and Dr. Ismael Noko, the Secretary General of the World Lutheran Federation, said that they would hold a press conference on 11 June, to announce the final adoption of the joint statement.
