The Australian Catholic Social Justice Council is supporting an international petition, organised by the community of St Egidio in Rome, for a moratorium on the use of the death penalty.
The petition calls for a suspension of the use of the death penalty by the year 2000. Signatures will be presented to significant international bodies such as the United Nations.
The petition asks for the moratorium proposal to be put to all nations represented at the UN.
The Australian Catholic Social Justice Council (ACSJC) will act as a central collection point for signed petitions in Australia.
The community of St Egidio believes in the necessity of completely abolishing capital punishment. While waiting for this to be achieved, they propose a suspension of executions.
The community of St Egidio, Amnesty International as well as Sr Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking, have already started collecting thousands of signatures for the appeal in Italy, the USA and on all continents.
For further details email - or go to, where the petition is located.
