The major ecumenical event next year will be a pilgrimage from Canberra to Uluru. Details of this and other events are being outlined at a National Council of Churches committee meeting in Sydney this week.
Reconciliation will be a major theme, but it will encompass an agenda wider than relations between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.
"We have to find an appropriate way to acknowledge that it's the 2000 anniversary of the birth of Christ," says Bishop Michael Putney, chair of the meeting.
"It's also a Jubilee Year which carries the whole connotation of achieving peace and justice and reconciliation among people. One of the practical goals for that would be to lift the burden of debt off the most heavily indebted nations of the world," he said.
