The convenor of the NSW Professional Standards Resource Group John Davoren has said that the Church is "still uncomfortable with whistleblowers". The Group ensures allegations of sexual misconduct by church personnel are investigated.
The former Centacare social worker told the Catholic Weekly that "there is a change of thinking in the Church community required... The Church is a place where secrets are revered, and where forgiveness is given a high priority".
He said that the next hurdle is agreeing on ethical standards for priests and religious - outlined in draft form in Integrity in Ministry (1997). The document is intended to clarify hitherto ambiguous situations and prevent the unintentional abuse of power that is a legacy of most Catholics' unquestioning behaviour towards figures of authority in the Church.
