National Director of the Australian Catholic Social Welfare Commission, Mr Toby O'Connor, today appealed to the Australian Democrats to tread cautiously in their GST discussions with the Government.
Mr O'Connor Said: "What is becoming clearer since the conclusion of extensive Senate Hearings and Senator Harradine's decision to vote against the inherently unfair GST legislation is that we can have real tax reform in this country without a GST.
He said that while a GST without food is now highly likely, more fundamental questions about tax reform still need to be considered.
"The good health of our economy and a missive $5.4 billion Federal Budget surplus places whe onus on Government to pursue reform which offers benefits for all Australians without a GST being the cornerstone of a new tax system," he said.
