|Spirituality||JAPANESE ARCHBISHOP HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF HOLY PLACES|
"Shrines are a precious gift of God to the Church and to humanity. It is in shrines that we meet God, in a very special way, interwoven in the history of peoples." These are the words of Japanese Archbishop Stephen Fumio Hamao, who yesterday unveiled the document "The Shrine: Memory, Presence and Prophecy of the Living God".
Archbishop Hamao, who is President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, explained that "the prophetic character of shrines guarantees the pilgrim's hope that in the joy of that meeting he will obtain renewed strength to continue on his way."
He hopes the new document will foster cooperation within the church during the coming Jubilee year, bringing the faithful closer to the goal of "friendship with God."
