On Sunday, the Catholic Church will celebrate the consecrated contemplative life.
According to Vatican statistics, there are almost 56,000 "cloistered" nuns. In addition there are consecrated virgins outside of the religious congregations, members of new forms of consecrated life (which often admit married couples), and hermits who have publicly professed the evangelical counsels.
The 56,000 cloistered nuns belong to 3,601 autonomous monasteries ("sui iuris"). Secular institutes number 186. They are juridically recognized and included in the states of consecrated life in the 1947 constitution 'Provida Mater Ecclesia.'
