|Social Welfare||LEVY COULD HELP DRUG RESEARCH|
Catholic expert on drug addiction, Br Peter Bourke OH, has suggested a levy on alcohol and cigarettes to help fund research into Australia's drug problem.
Br Bourke, who is chairman of the Australian Institute of Counselling Addictions, says a levy would net some $4.2 billion a year for research on the treatment of drug addiction.
He said such levies could become the contribution from the manufacturers of alcohol and tobacco towards the health budget.
Br Bourke was speaking after the recent Summit on Drugs in Sydney. Br Bourke, from the St John of God Order, participated in the summit and voted on the final resolutions.
