|USA||BISHOPS SUPPORT NEBRASKA'S STAND AGAINST DEATH PENALTY|
The US Catholic Bishops Conference has supported the Nebraska State Legislature's approved a two year moratorium on capital punishment. The ban makes it the first state to approve a delay on the death penalty by legislative vote.
The official Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano commented this week that the path to total abolition is still long and difficult. For the approved moratorium to be applied, the governor of Nebraska's signature is required. Frank Johanns, the governor, admitted he is undecided.
The law, which was approved by 27 votes in favor and 21 against, allows for capital punishment to be imposed, but it cannot be carried out within the next two years.
