|East Timor||BISHOP CASTS DOUBT OVER UN ROLE|
The Bishop of Baucau, Basilio Nascimento. Bishop Carlos Belo has said that after more than 23 yearas of harsh Indonesian rule, many people doubt whether the United Nations can bring peace to the province.
Bishop Nascimento and Nobel Laureate Bishop Carlos Belo are the only two Catholic bishops in East Timor.
Bishop Nascimento says he hopes the United Nations can end political intimidation in East Timor and that will be helped he says by the UN having a presence in every village.
If peace is achieved in his own area, he believes most people would vote for independence rather than autonomy on 8 August.
