|China||SPLIT CHURCH DIVIDES FAMILIES|
Division between "open" and "underground" Church communities in many places in China not only hampers evangelization among non-Catholics but also adversely affects families' social and religious life.
Husbands and wives belong to different sides, and one layman reported that his children no longer go to church partly because of the Church's division.
A priest in whose Fujian province parish two-thirds of some 5000 Catholics belong to the underground Church said, "The division makes it difficult to pool resources to implement pastoral and other Church development plans."
A nun in Fujian, an underground stronghold, spoke of couples with one member from each side being unable to get married because of their families' opposition.
