|Philippines||PRESIDENT AND CARDINAL COOPERATE TO UPLIFT THE POOR|
Philippine President Joseph Estrada and Cardinal Jaime Sin of Manila promised to support each other's initiatives for the poor during an award ceremony honouring the cardinal at the presidential palace late last week.
UCA News reports that the President conferred on Cardinal Sin the Order of Sikatuna, an award traditionally given to individuals for outstanding achievement and for outstanding service to the country.
Estrada said he drew much inspiration from the cardinal, particularly with regard to the "preferential option for the poor." Cardinal Sin pledged the Philippine Church's support for efforts Estrada undertakes "to lift up the lives of millions of our fellow Filipinos who are burdened by so much poverty and want."
