|Vatican||HOLY SEE EXPRESSES CONCERN ABOUT NAZARETH VIOLENCE||
The Holy See has expressed concerns to the
government of Israel over the recent violent confrontations in Nazareth.
In a message to the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and other Catholic leaders of the Holy Land, the Vatican indicated that the papal nuncio in Israel, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, has been in contact with government authorities to discuss the riots in Nazareth. The city has been in turmoil recently, because of conflicts arising over plans to build a mosque next to the site of the Church of the Annunciation.
The Vatican observed that the people promoting the mosque site are not natives of Nazareth, and their plan, "according to many observers, represents only a provocation." The Holy See asked the Israeli government to ensure adequate security in Nazareth, "and to preserve the sacred character of the town."
