The Australian Catholic Bishops are giving their attention to a 560 page draft research report on the participation of women in the Australian Catholic Church, ahead of its publication as a book later this year.
Titled Woman and Man: One in Christ Jesus, the report is the result of one of the most comprehensive research projects ever undertaken by the Catholic Church in Australia. The bishops have said in a statement that they expect it to be an important resource for the Australian Church for many years.
A summary was presented to the plenary meeting of the Bishops Conference in Sydney on Monday.
The many thousands of people who participated in the project included those who made written submissions, presentations at public hearings, responses to the relevant questionnaire in the 1997 Catholic Church Life Survey, contributions to the discussions by targeted groups and replies to requests for data from Catholic organisations and theological institutes.
The NSW coordinator for Women and the Australian Church, Ms Bernice Moore, told the Sydney Morning Herald: "I feel heartened that they want to continue a dialogue, because there's been huge benefits from the voice of women being heard already."
