People in Third World countries are particularly vulnerable to TB because of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS. This was one of the themes of an international conference of church workers from 37 countries organised by Caritas Internationalis in Germany.
The UCA news agency reports that the conference encouraged participants to improve their commitment in responding to the diseases and to strengthen the capacity of established local structures and the North-South partnership. It proposed creation of a mechanism for regularly updating information on epidemiology, treatment issues and educational strategies, and for continual evaluation of efforts.
Participants identified obstacles they encountered in responding to the diseases including lack of commitment to understand how TB and HIV worsen, treatment-related problems, increasing vulnerability due to changing contexts and increasing competition for resources.
