Chairperson of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Couincil (NATSICC) Peter Smith, has commended the Prime Minister for including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the preamble to the new constitution. But he has expressed doubts about the reasons for the prime minister's action.
Mr Smith said: "One must question whether he wants to resurrect the native title debate along with the republic debate. Is it to create a negative attitude to the republic issue to help ensure the bid for a republic fails? If this is so then I must strongly express our view that we are sick and tired of being used for political point scoring."
