|Brisbane||DEATH OF BISHOP CUSKELLY||
Catholics from around the country gathered on Thursday to farewell Bishop Eugene James Cuskelly, MSC, who passed away last Sunday night after a long battle with cancer.
Bishop Cuskelly, who was auxiliary bishop of Brisbane from 1982 until his retirement in 1996, was 75. Born in Toowoomba in 1924, he joined the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1941 and went on to become the congregation's superior general, leading it through the critical post-Vatican II years.
He was the author of seven books, a pastor of warmth and sensitivity, and a noted ecumenist, becoming the first president of Queensland Churches Together (QCT). As vicar for pastoral planning, he set Brisbane on the road to planning for the future shaping and staffing of parishes. He had been living in retirement in poor health for a number of years and died in the care of the Sisters of St Joseph at Nundah. On Thursday, many of the people whose lives he touched came together in St Stephen's Cathedral to farewell Bishop Cuskell
